The Salvation Army NSC Job Description- Truck Driver
Summary: Drives The Salvation Army's vehicles to pick up and deliver donationsfo furniture, clothing and any other items donated to The Salvation Army. Delivers merchandise to warehouse and Family Stores as directed by the Warehouse Manager. Responsible for movement of merchandise from one location(warehouse and Family Stores) to another location as directed by the warehouse manager. Provides assistance as needed and directed by the warehouse manager to warehouse operations, to include driving the forklift, running the baler and cycling of merchandise (movement of older stock to front). Provide guidance and instruction to Truck Driver Helper.
Ensures all Army vehicles are maintained and clean. Checks fluid levels at the start of each day. Checks tightness of belts and tire pressure each morning. Trucks should be washed monthly and trucks should be swept out at the end of each day.
Reviews scheduled pick ups to ensure they are scheduled for the correct day of the week and geographical location.
Maintains appropriate log listing donations received in accordance with Corps regulations.
Completes donation receipts for customers at time of pick up; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same and turn in copies of the receipts daily with pick up log.
Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the type of items that can be accepted.
Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and protects donor's property such as trees, landscaping, ets., as well as door facings, handrails, etc.
Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at Warehouse/Family Store facilities; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse/ family store facilities.
Turns in gas receipts daily with pick up log.
Loads and disposes of non-usable items at the dump/landfill.
Performs all other tasks as assigned by the warehouse manager or the Corps Officer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED;
High School diploma or G.E.D. preferred but not required.
One year experience driving a heavy duty truck or large van or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Ability to communicate, read and write the English language.
Be physically fit, heavy lifting required.
Licenses and Certificates
Valid drivers license required
Knowledge, skills and abilities
Ability to drive and operate a truck (either automatic or manual transmission) with a bed or cagin of 14' in length or longer.
Ability to drive and operate a small to medium size forklift with a capacity of 3,000 lbs or more.
Ability to operate a tailgate lift on back of truck.
Ability to operate various hand trucks and carts.
Ability to follow instructions.
Ability to get along with others
Mental & Physical abilites
Employee must be physically fit
Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involing the lifting and carrying of heavy objects up to 100 lbs.
Work requires driving a vehicle daily with exposure to the outdoors where there are physical discomforts associated with changes in weather such as rain, cold, heat, or discomforts associated with noices, dust, dirt and the like.
