The ancestors of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation existed many centuries ago as a community of people…a Tribe living together, farming, hunting and fishing to survive.

Job Purpose:

Provides receptionist duties to the clinical front office and medical assistance to patients

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Greets and assists callers and visitors with requests and inquiries and responds to voicemail messages
  2. Schedules and confirms medical appointments and informs patients of any changes
  3. Verifies insurance and/or eligibility
  4. Scans insurance information into Electronic Medical Records data-base
  5. Enters patient information into Electronic Medical Records data-base
  6. Collects co-pay at time of service
  7. Prepares receipts for incoming payments
  8. Balances and posts daily monetary intake
  9. Notifies Health Information Technician of supplies needed
  10. Determines eligibility of patient, unless triage and otherwise directed by a licensed provider
  11. Monitors patient arrivals and ensures wait time is kept to a minimum
  12. Retrieves answering machine and fax messages and forwards to appropriate staff member
  13. Informs Clinical Operation Manager/QI of any equipment and facility repairs needed
  14. Adheres to standards for infection control in accordance with Local, State, and Federal OSHA regulations
  15. Attends all full staff and departmental meetings
  16. Screens patients prior to visit with medical provider
  17. Performs treatments and diagnostic procedures including audiology screens, visual acuity screens, EKGs, and ear cleansing by irrigation
  18. Assists medical providers with exams and minor surgical procedures
  19. Administers and documents parenteral, oral medications, and skin tests as ordered by provider
  20. Cleans minor wounds, changes dressings, and removes sutures with direct supervision
  21. Prepares exam rooms and equipment ensuring exam rooms are clean and neat
  22. Ensures inventory is current and exam rooms are stocked with appropriate supplies and forms
  23. Scans prescriptions to the pharmacy prior to patient’s departure
  24. Completes appropriate areas on Electronic Medical Records System, including vital signs, allergies and medications
  25. Scans insurance information and medical reports into Electronic Medical Records System
  26. Evaluates patient’s immunization status and administers vaccinations according to accepted schedules, standing orders, and per medical provider’s approval
  27. Monitors vaccine supply for appropriate refrigeration and freezer temperatures and immediately notifies supervisor of temperatures out of range
  28. Registers immunizations in San Diego’s immunization registry database
  29. Obtains, prepares, stores, and forwards specimens to servicing laboratory in absence of lab tech to include: finger stick hemoglobin, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C determinations, lipid levels, urine pregnancy test, rapid strap test, urine dipstick, urine micral, and collects capillary lead specimens
  30. Informs medical providers of observed patient behavior that may affect patient’s illness or treatment
  31. Provides patient comfort and brings patient issues to the attention of the Clinical Operation Manager
  32. Ensures sharps containers are changed as necessary
  33. Monitors eye wash stations daily
  34. Ensures standards for infection control are met in accordance with local, state and federal OSHA regulations
  35. Assists with required reports as needed
  36. Participates in health conferences
  37. Attends all full staff and departmental meetings
  38. Maintains continuing education requirements for MA recertification
  39. Cleans and sterilizes instruments and disposes of contaminated supplies according to OSHA guidelines

Job Specifications:

Education and Experience:


  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant certification
  • Medical Assistant Experience
  • Current CPR Certification


  • Tribal clinic experience
  • Experience in a Primary Care environment
  • State Certified Medical Assistant

Skills and Knowledge:


  • Excellent knowledge of laws and regulations governing medical records and medical office protocols
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with patients and medical personnel
  • Ability to enter data into data-base
  • Working knowledge of Electronic Health Records database
  • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Excellent knowledge of English both written and oral
  • Ability to appear for work on time
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to walk and stand for 8 hours at a time
  • Ability to perform repetitive bending, reaching, pulling and pushing
  • Ability to assist with the transfer of patient from wheelchair to examination table
