ISO New England oversees the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of  New England and administers the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for the buying and selling of wholesale electricity. The power system is constantly evolving as new technologies emerge and energy policies evolve. There is a lot going on at our organization behind the scenes to make sure the grid continuously yields reliable electricity at competitive prices while addressing the unique challenges that come along with our industry.
Intern - Transmission Planning

The Transmission Planning group ensures the reliable supply of electricity across the six New England states for the next ten years, even as the energy landscape changes. The group addresses transmission system reliability needs through solutions that are operable, economic, and compliant with all required standards. The group diligently accomplishes this by being impartial, thinking critically, and collaborating with external stakeholders and ISO-NE personnel. The internship position will assist the Transmission Planning group with performing engineering work to ensure the future reliability of the New England transmission system. The work assigned to the internship position is specifically designed to provide relevant work experience for building a career in the power systems analysis field.

How You Will Make an Impact:
  • Develop and review computer models that represent the New England transmission system
  • Simulate and analyze transmission system behavior
  • Construct software based work automation tools
  • Participate in the development of recommendations and solutions to ensure the continued reliability of the New England transmission system
What We Look For:
  • Enrollment in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree program in Electrical Engineering  Power Systems focused preferred
  • Interest in a career as a power systems engineer
  • Ability to work out difficult technical problems (including taking steps to individually figure things out, and knowing when to ask for help)
  • Ability to work with others (which includes good collaboration and written/oral communication skills)
  • Previous/current membership or leadership roles in professional groups, clubs, or extracurricular activities
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access or other office programs
Minimum Education Level: Rising Senior
Preferred Majors: Electrical Engineering (Required) with a focus on Power Systems (Preferred)


To be eligible for the internship candidate must have completed at least the first year of college and be currently enrolled in a four year or graduate-level academic program. Candidates must have the authority to work in the US on a permanent basis, without requiring sponsorship.
