Located in Malibu, California, HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
Engineer Level III – Structural and Thermal Dynamics Engineer
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The candidate will be expected to conduct experimental verification and finite element modeling of cryogenic systems involving both structural dynamics and heat transfer.
The goal is to develop new cryogenic systems that push the state of the art in low noise testing for quantum devices.
The candidate will be expected to assist in the design, prototyping and test of new cryogenic system concepts with a team of engineers. Opportunities to creatively contribute to new intellectual property, generate ideas for new research programs, and assist in writing proposals and journal quality papers exist for the motivated candidate. Opportunities also exist to grow into a leadership role with more experience.
The candidate should have the theoretical background and practical experience with structural dynamics or heat transfer as applied to sensitive industrial machinery and equipment. The candidate should have experience in finite element modeling and simulation of structures for vibration or heat transfer. The candidate should have experience in sensor selection, data acquisition, and proven laboratory testing experience for low noise environments. Effective communication and experience giving presentations is a must.
Knowledge of the basic principles of mechanical systems with combined structural dynamics and heat transfer requirements. Knowledge of CAD (e.g. Solidworks) and FEA (e.g. Abaqus, COMSOL, or ANSYS) is also required. The candidate should be comfortable working in Matlab and/or Python. Experience with previous cryogenic instrumentation or modeling is a plus.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Have visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity and good verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently is required.
MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or related discipline with an emphasis on structural dynamics or heat transfer.
U.S. citizenship. Must have or be willing to apply for a security clearance.
HRL offers a very competitive compensation and benefits package. Our benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401K match, gym facilities, PTO, growth potential, and an exciting and challenging work environment.
