ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Lead the development of magnetic materials to address long-standing technical challenges in automotive, aerospace and defense applications. Simulate performance of novel magnetic domain structures and compositions. Work closely with the group’s experts in additive manufacturing to leverage the benefits of 3D printing for microstructure and form factor.
Present ideas and results in effective technical presentations, write research proposals and journal publications. Collaborate with team members and colleagues in goal-driven basic and applied research and development efforts.
As a Magnetic Materials Scientist, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials, structures and devices, with current projects spanning from formulating new materials for additive manufacturing to structure optimization for hypersonic vehicles. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative Scientist to grow within our group. With more experience, the candidate should grow into the role of an expert who proposes and manages new research programs.
Deep technical expertise in and scientific understanding of magnetic materials is required.
Strong background in modeling and simulation of magnetic properties is required.
The candidate should have a track record of innovation and scientific achievement evidenced by multiple strong publications.
The candidate should have experience with processing, characterization and testing of magnetic materials. Experience with electronic band structure modeling is a plus.
Knowledge of advanced physics and chemistry of magnetic materials is required.
Broader knowledge of multifunctional materials is desired.
Application specific knowledge for advanced magnetic materials is desired.
Technical leadership and interest in scientific issues related to electric motors and magnetic devices is ideal.
Broad interest in innovation that addresses over-the-horizon automotive and aerospace problems is highly encouraged.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required. Ability to obtain a security clearance is a plus.
