ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Join the team that fabricates cutting edge microelectronics, photonics, IR sensors, and MEMS devices. The Product Integration Department of the Microfabrication Technology Lab at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of engineers performing research, development, and manufacture of novel materials and devices for commercial and government applications. We seek a self-motivated engineer with strong communication and leadership skills to serve as the Department Manager (level 2 manager) for the product integration teams. The role consists of roughly 50% management and 50% technical contributions. Line management duties include managing resources (e.g. allocating team personnel to projects), talent acquisition (e.g. recruiting), performance management through informal and formal feedback, generating lab-wide managerial or engineering procedures and processes, and coaching level 1 section leads as direct reports. Technical contributions (through direct technical work and/or technical project leadership) can be aligned with the skills and capabilities of the candidate, with preference in the area of high-frequency RF transistor fabrication. Technical and managerial duties require the candidate to present details of work to colleagues and customers, create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines, and provide written and oral summaries of work performed as needed (e.g. for reports).
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: At least 2 years of experience in a role involving leadership of engineers or technicians. 5 or more years of experience in a microfabrication environment. Hands-on experience with both 1) microfabrication integration including process flow creation, traveler creation, and continuous improvement and 2) product maturation, statistical process control, and excursion management. Experience with compound semiconductors such as GaN, GaAs is a plus. Experience in a high-mix, low-volume cleanroom facility is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Knowledge of people management, organizational management, and change management principles is required. Knowledge of semiconductor fabrication and cleanroom operation is also required. Knowledge of semiconductor product development principles, semiconductor manufacturing principles, and statistical process control is beneficial. Strong technical writing, proposal, presentation, and general communication skills are desired.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in use of computers,
electronic equipment, oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces and have both visual and hearing acuity. Must be able to work in a cleanroom environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship is required. Ability to obtain and
maintain a security clearance is a plus.
