ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Electro-Optical (EO) Device Technologies Group of the Sensor and Electronics Lab at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of scientists and engineers performing pioneering work on advanced materials and device technologies for commercial and government applications in an innovative research and development environment. We seek a self-motivated scientist / engineer with strong communication and leadership skills to serve as the Group Leader (first line manager) for the EO device team. The role consists of roughly 25% management and 75% technical contributions. Line management duties include managing resources (e.g. allocating team personnel to projects), talent acquisition (e.g. recruiting), performance management through informal and formal feedback, and additional department-wide, lab-wide, and company-wide assignments (e.g. business development and planning for capital investments), as well as providing critical feedback to staff. Technical contributions (through direct technical work and/or technical project leadership) should be aligned with the skills and capabilities of the team in the areas of integrated photonic research, EO device design and fabrication, test and modeling and/or advanced materials for photonic applications. The position will also involve collaboration with senior management to develop lab-wide strategy in these areas. Technical and managerial duties require the candidate to present details of work to colleagues and customers, create and manage work plans to meet or exceed schedule deadlines, and provide written and oral summaries of work performed as needed (e.g. for reports).

Demonstrated experience with successful resource allocation and management of technical projects. More than 7 years of experience in one or more of the technical areas outlined above, preferably in a research and development environment. Hands-on experience with 1) integrated photonic device development for Lidar and other chip scale photonic systems. 2) EO materials and device technology development and 3) novel photonic devices for quantum sensing and communication – candidates with exceptionally strong experience in these areas will be considered. Hands on experience in process development and device fabrication on various optical platforms including Si, III-V and other novel materials is essential. Experience with epitaxial materials growth and/or device modeling is a plus. Experience with developing low loss photonic platform and III-V active device is a plus. Direct experience with working with state of art photonic foundry is a plus. Must have authored scientific publications and given technical presentations. Experience with proposal writing and program management is desired.
