Engineer III - Power Electronics Engineer
EDUCATION DESIRED: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Contribute technical expertise in the area of power electronics design, implementation, and test. Work within diverse teams taking primary responsibility for the design, implementation and test of high-performance custom power electronics components and subsystems with switching frequencies up to 1 MHz or more. Examples are linear power supplies, switching power supplies, transducer drivers, class-D audio amplifiers, power converters, switch drivers, etc. Perform preliminary and critical designs based on COTS or custom active and passive parts and components, perform or oversee fabrication and testing. Additional job functions include solving customer problems, writing invention disclosures, documenting and presenting work within teams and to customers, participating in proposal activities.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: At least 3 years of experience designing, implementing and testing switch-mode power electronics circuits is required. Experience simulating the behavior of switch-mode power electronics in Spice, ADS, or similar software is required. Experience designing power electronics subsystems and designing with SiC or GaN devices is desired. Experience with voltages above 1 kV is a plus. Experience with printed circuit board layout and hands-on testing is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Working knowledge of high-efficiency power electronics circuits from the component to subsystem level, including operation, controls, safety, etc. A working familiarity with characteristics and tradeoffs of today’s active and passive components. A working knowledge of the availability of COTS components. Understanding of switch-device physics desired.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicant must be able to interact professionally with program managers, co-workers, customers, operate complex electronic equipment, perform detailed analyses of power electronics circuits, and prepare written and oral presentations. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be willing to travel and work in a team of highly skilled engineers on complex projects, and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license, special tools or restrictions): U.S. Citizen is required. Ability to obtain a security clearance desired.
