Engineer IV – Materials Informatics Researcher
EDUCATION DESIRED: Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics or related discipline with an emphasis on applications of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence in these fields.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Join a dynamic research team pushing the state of the art in multifunctional materials and adaptive structures.The primary job function will be to lead and perform on innovative R&D programs in novel material development and material processing improvements for the next generation of high performance aerospace, automotive and defense applications.The candidate will be expected to conduct theoretical analysis, simulation, and design of materials, structures and production processes.The candidate will also be expected to work comfortably in the lab environment, leading a team of engineers in the rapid prototyping and test cycle needed to advance new concepts from idea to system-level integration.The candidate will also be expected to contribute creatively to new intellectual property, generate ideas for new research programs, and to assist in writing proposals and journal quality papers.
EXPERIENCE DESIRED: The candidate should have experience in modeling and simulation of materials and/or structures with an emphasis on applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to the automation of the design of physical systems.The candidate should also have experimental experience in the lab characterizing the performance of materials and/or structures.The ideal candidate would have a strong prototyping background with experience in sensor selection and data acquisition.The candidate is expected to have published journal papers.Effective communication and experience giving presentations is a must.Experience with writing government proposals is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE DESIRED: Knowledge of the basic principles of materials science and/or chemistry is required. The candidate should be comfortable working in Matlab and/or Python.Knowledge of the Python packages Pyro, Keras, Sci-kit Learn are a plus.Knowledge of CAD (e.g. Solidworks) and FEA (e.g. Abaqus) is also desirable.Experience with performing Molecular Dynamics (MD), CALPHAD, or phase field modeling is a plus.Experience applying machine learning tools to large materials science databases (e.g. crystallographic databases) is a plus.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform processing procedures related to fabrication of materials. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Have visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity and good verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently is required.
