Engineer I - Additive Manufacturing
EDUCATION DESIRED: B.S. or M.S. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or equivalent industrial experience.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist in research and development of additive manufacturing technologies. Support the entire development cycle including feedstock synthesis, sample fabrication, materials analysis and mechanical testing. Typical tasks for this job include new concept brainstorming, modeling and simulation (CAD, FEA, Matlab), 3D printing of samples or parts, microscopy and characterization, tensile testing with load frames, as well as data analysis. With more experience, the candidate can grow into roles with more responsibility including: writing patents, journal publications, and proposals, and managing research projects. The ideal candidate has creative problem solving skills, hands-on experience, and the ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently.
The candidate should have experience related to materials processing, characterization and testing. Hands-on laboratory experience (outside of coursework) with additive manufacturing equipment and techniques is highly desirable. Prior experience with post-processing methods including heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, and sintering is a plus. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g. TGA, EBSD, FTIR, DSC, metallographic polishing) is also a plus.
Knowledge of the basic principles of materials is required. Knowledge of standard protocols for multi-step additive manufacturing is highly desirable. The applicant should have some experience in CAD. Prior programming background (C++, python) or electronics prototyping knowledge (Arduino, National Instruments) is a plus. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform work while wearing a powered or unpowered air purifying respirator. Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Have visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity and good verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required.
