As the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator (EHS) for GLWA you will conduct safety programs and investigates safety concerns to ensure compliance with applicable local, state and federal rules and regulations. This position is also involves creating organized efforts and procedures for identifying workplace hazards and reducing accidents and exposure to harmful situations and substances. You will be involved in the training of personnel in accident prevention, accident response, emergency preparedness, and use of protective clothing and equipment. In this role you’ll be responsible for monitoring policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.

Responsibilities (not all-inclusive)

  • You will conduct safety inspections and identify violations at all GLWA properties and facilities; investigate and submit written reports on incidents involving environmental health and safety matters.
  • You will respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials to aid in remediation efforts.
  • The EHS Coordinator assists in the coordination of abatement action programs and maintains up-to-date emergency response plans and procedures as well as current knowledge of policies, guidelines and regulations from governmental agencies.
  • Assist in compiling statistics, preparing reports and maintaining records of safety violations, OSHA/MIOSHA logs, workers’ compensation cases and other documents; crafting programs to control, eliminate and prevent future injuries and/or illnesses.
  • Monitor response to potentially unsafe conditions such as smoke, fire, spills, odors, and/or exposure, risk and/or contamination.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety standards and best management practices and provide interpretations of rules and regulations pertaining to EHS to staff.
  • Direct and administer preparation and maintenance of mandated environmental regulatory licenses, records, and permits on behalf of GLWA.

Required Education & Experience

  • Associate, Bachelor’s degree or equivalent coursework; with specialization in environmental or occupational health and safety or a related discipline
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in assisting with planning and conducting successful safety programs covering a wide variety of occupations and exposures to hazardous work environments
  • Certified Safety Professional Certification preferred

  • First Aid, CPR, etc.
  • Hazards commonly encountered in various occupations and industries and effective safety measures
  • Michigan Workers Compensation Law
  • Federal and Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA and MIOSHA)
  • Standard practices of accident reporting and exposure evaluation
  • Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Environmental Quality (MDEQ) requirements
  • Municipal building and fire codes
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements
  • All federal, state, and local regulatory agencies involving water sector requirements
  • Root cause and corrective action analysis techniques
  • Negotiation techniques
  • Effective safety training programs
  • Detect potentially hazardous situations
  • Be observant to hazardous conditions
  • Stimulate active interest in safety practices
  • Decide the most effective means of reducing workplace accidents
  • Build strong relationships with outside regulatory agencies
  • Manage completion of safety corrective actions
  • Create trending reports of safety data
  • Assist in the development of and provide safety training
  • Manage contracts and contractors related to safety and health

Other Requirements:

  • Valid Michigan Driver License
  • The ability to work irregular hours, to commute to GLWA facilities and work sites, and respond to after hour emergencies and on-call responses.
