The Roanoke Times is seeking an Events And Community Outreach Manager to be responsible for the overall marketing and public relations strategies designed to meet and exceed budgeted goals.  General responsibilities include developing marketing plans and coordinating advertising community events in the Roanoke market.  The Events and Community Outreach Manager ensures that our advertising strategies are planned and executed according to the advertising marketing plan.  If you believe you are the right candidate for this position please apply to

Under the general supervision of the Advertising Director, The Community Outreach and Events Manager is responsible for the successful planning and execution of The Roanoke Times events,  special projects and initiatives.  The Manager will be involved in all aspects of the events including visioning, planning, budgeting, promotion, execution, staff involvement and communication with exhibitors and sponsors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. 

  • Represent The Roanoke Times in a professional and polished manner at all times including demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and positive persona. Approach others with an energetic and enthusiastic approach while upholding the core values and goals of The Roanoke Times. 

  • Visualize and develop specific community and outreach initiatives based on market demographic and analytical data.

  • Maintain an events and community outreach calendar complete with dates, deadlines and  milestone reporting.

  • Collaborate with Advertising Director to create attractions and themes for all Roanoke Times events and special initiatives and projects.

  • Able to lead and engage with sales Account Executives in a motivating and enthusiastic manner

  • Collaborate with the newsroom on unique advertising and community outreach events.

  • Organize and keep track of all event and outreach marketing including print, online and trade.
  • Keep track of sponsorship elements to ensure fulfillment of sponsorship agreements.
  • Prepare “proof of performance” folders for sponsors at the conclusion of each event.
  • Organize and keep track of all P&L reporting.
  • Negotiate with vendors to secure products and services at the best price and quality.
  • Communicate deadlines to the Advertising Sales Department and other necessary parties.
  • Work with Creative to design and create event sales contests and proposals for use by the sales department.
  • Create and maintain database of exhibitor information to include, but not limited to, contact information, booth and package information.
  • Create and maintain database of vendor information to include but not limited to, contact information, product information and deadlines.
  • Coordinate and send out all exhibitor mailings.
  • Communicate/meet with exhibitors, sponsors and vendors on a continual basis, becoming an important point of contact after a sale or purchase is made.
  • Provide the Advertising Sales Department with any materials needed to assist in selling Roanoke Times events.
  • Respond appropriately and professionally to resolve issues with exhibitors, talent, vendors and other event personnel up to and including show set-up and tear down.
  • Organize, coordinate and oversee volunteer staffing for events.

Education/Experience:  Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree or one to two years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Language Ability:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Math Ability: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages.


Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.


Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk and hear.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is required to stand and walk, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.


Work Environment:  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.


Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, the Marketing Event Coordinator should have knowledge of word processing software; spreadsheet software; and database software.
