JOB SUMMARY:
A reporter/page designer for BH Media Group will create comprehensive and organized presentations for our news, sports, business and feature pages on a daily basis.This individual will be responsible for producing news graphics that give life and impact to news stories and monitor news events to help conceptualize graphic opportunities that are both helpful and information to readers. A reporter/page designer will also be asked to produce stories on an as-needed basis. A reporter/page designer is an entry level position that requires a bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or equivalent experience.One to two years experience at a smaller newspaper is preferred.Internships at larger papers and strong college newspaper experience will be highly considered.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Perform and execute all work practices in a safe manner. Constant safety awareness is mandatory for all employees.

  2. Completes work in a timely manner and meets deadlines.

  3. Proofreading local and wire content for accuracy and reader friendliness. This will go beyond base-level proofreading and could include recasting the lead, breaking the story up into fragments or choosing to remove content based on length considerations or balance.

  4. Takes note of errors and does not repeat them.

  5. Spells correctly and never misspells names.

  6. Exercising single-copy judgment through play of stories, art and photos when designing the front page.

  7. Communicates frequently with editors and other newsroom staff to coordinate plans.

  8. Works with others to develop visual andmultimedia elements to go with stories.

  9. Select wire stories for publication.

  10. Daily maintenance and operating process duties as assigned relating to Internet presence and web design functions.

  11. Proofread completed pages to detect errors and make corrections.

  12. Exercising sound editorial judgment and taking into accountreader needs when ordering the news within sections.

  13. Downloading, toning and editing wire photos and graphics as needed.

  14. Uploading content to the Web site at night and during the evening and maintaining it throughout the day. Also post content to social media.

  15. Valid driver’s license and insurance required.

  16. On-site, regular and reliable attendance is required.

  17. Safely drive to and from various locations.


MARGINAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists in special projects as needed.

2.All other duties as assigned.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Ability to follow all Company policies and procedures including but not limited to attendance standards.

  2. An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily

  3. Ability to edit copy in accordance with good grammar, accurate spelling and AP style.

  4. Ability to budget time and meet deadlines.

  5. Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degreein journalism or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of one to two years experience preferred. Experience may be on college newspaper or through internships.
