Bristol Herald Production Facility Mailroom Manager

The position is responsible for managing and directing a staff of full and part-time employees in the Mailroom, assembling, inserting, bindery and packaging daily, weekly and commercial newspapers within the specific location on deadline. Understanding and maintenance of all equipment in the mailroom department is also included in the job description.
 

ESSENTIAL
JOB FUNCTIONS:


  • Manage all day-to-day Packaging
    functions.                               

    This
    includes oversight for receiving, inventorying and insertion of all inserts,
    management of dock operations and overseeing general operation of mailroom
    staff and machinery. Directs employees to ensure correct inserts being
    delivered, inventoried, processed and inserted into the separate published
    editions that are delivered to our customers in a timely manner.   Make sure all aspects of safety, and quality
    control are in place at all times and strictly enforced. 

  • Operate and maintain packaging
    equipment allowing for consistent
    production workflow.   

    Manage
    and oversee set-up and running of all inserting and down line

    equipment
    used in the Packaging operation.  Ensure
    routine

    maintenance
    of all packaging equipment is completed and logged

    ensuring
    all deadlines and quality standards are met. 
    Troubleshoot

    other
    mechanical issues and repair as needed.        

  • Budget for and hire staff, coordinate
    with HR, counsel and coach employees on related problems or concerns, budget
    for and order supplies                         

    Recruit
    prospective applicants and hire as needed.

    Communicate
    with employees and handle other issues that arise in the department in a timely
    manner.  Budget for staff and all
    department supplies, be responsible for hiring and firing, inventory and
    ordering department supplies.

  • Train and Coordinate departmental
    efforts

    Enforce
    all safety policies and train packaging employees in the safe

    operation
    of the equipment in the department. Motivate workers and

    build
    a team environment working towards the common goals of the

    department.

  • Employee scheduling, administration,
    approval of time sheets               

    Schedule
    personnel in the most efficient manner to accomplish the

    work
    needed on a daily basis.

DIRECT
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:


  • Needs
    to be mechanically inclined, would be beneficial to have experience with
    packaging machinery.

  • Management
    experience is mandatory for this position.

  • Good
    communication skills are a must to be able to motivate and instruct the staff
    in order to achieve positive results. 

  • The
    ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems and find a solution is
    important. 
    Should possess the ability to make on-the-spot adjustments to workflow
    and planning to insure completion of
    the product on deadline. 

  • Experience
    in budgeting and managing staffing, inventory and supplies a plus.

  • The
    incumbent must be able to use strategic/tactical planning in order to achieve
    the results necessary in this department. 
    This includes all aspects of insert receiving inventory, scheduling of
    the packaging process and scheduling staff appropriately utilizing their skills
    in the best possible manner to achieve positive results.  

  • Must
    be mechanically inclined in order to problem solve daily mechanical issues that
    arise. 

  • Must
    be able to communicate with employees and peers in a positive manner and must
    be able to achieve positive results by hiring, motivating and leading the
    staff. 

  •  Must be able to do the entire budget, conduct
    inventories and order supplies for the department.    

  • Position
    primarily works during nighttime production hours, but schedule may vary.


 EDUCATION
AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school graduate or equivalent, college degree preferred (Associates or
    Bachelors)

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a leadership or management role.  Previous supervisory experience beneficial.
