Peak Adventures’ purpose is to kindle personal growth, leadership, and connections through experiences in the outdoors.
 

ASI’s Peak Adventures is an outdoor adventure program dedicated to getting Sac State Students outside. Peak Adventures provides guided outdoor trips, low cost gear rentals, full service bike repair at The Bike Shop, summer youth camps and team building at The Challenge Center.

SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Peak Adventures Outdoor Adventures Manager and the Programs Specialist, the Adventure Youth Camp Counselor is responsible for the daily operations of Adventure camp. They work as part of a two-counselor team and are responsible for the safety, instruction and participation of campers, ages 12 – 15 years old, in outdoor activities including canoeing, rock climbing, hiking and white water rafting. A typical Adventure Youth Camp Counselor works 4-6 week-long camps (M-F) per summer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Oversight of 6 – 10 campers per week.
• Attend mandatory trainings that include duties related to the position.
• Demonstrate proficiency in outdoor activities which include flat water canoeing, rock climbing, top rope anchor setting and hiking.
• Oversee group dynamics of the campers and managing group cohesion.
• Maintain camper behavior, discipline and enforcing consequences.
• Oversee and make decisions about risk management in the field in alignment with standard operating procedures.
• Oversee water safety.
• Assist raft guides with white water instruction and camper supervision.
• Operation of a 12-passenger van.
• Lead & facilitate games.
• Take pictures throughout camp week.
• Communicate with parents regarding camper behavior.
• Belay participants on some climbing elements at the Peak Adventures Challenge Center.
• Clean-up and maintain camp equipment and supplies.
• Teach and practice Leave No Trace (LNT).
• Teach backcountry hygiene.
• Daily check-in and check-out of campers.
• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must meet Sacramento State student assistant eligibility requirements
• CPR Certification (Online certification not accepted)
• Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Certification
• Obtain a Class C Driver’s License with a Passenger Endorsement prior to start of camps
• Meet ASI driving requirements
• Ability to lift and move up to 60 pounds

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working with youth
• Experience with outdoor activities including canoeing, rock climbing, hiking and rafting
• Experience with top-rope anchor building for outdoor rock climbing
• Experience leading games & facilitating activities
• Belay experience
• Water safety skills
