Shipping Technician

*This is a rotational position based in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska (North Slope)* 

A shipping technician is primarily responsible for the safe and efficient receiving, handling, issuing, inventory, staging and shipping of warehouse materials and containers in compliance with DOT and hazardous materials regulations. Operates forklifts and other material handling equipment as required, and operate light-duty trucks to and from required/various locations. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work in a safe manner and correct unsafe acts and conditions.
  • Participate in a quality Tool Box Talk (TBT) daily.
  • Develop quality Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) for non-routine work being performed.
  • Maintain a working relationship between the North Slope Material Operations and Anchorage Material Center Operations.
  • Interact with customer’s preferred carriers and suppliers with a customer service attitude.
  • Operate light trucks, forklifts, and material handling equipment safely.
  • Read and/or follow oral instructions to identify materials or containers to be moved.
  • Load/unload containers, lift materials, and identify, label, count, receive, and issue materials containers.
  • Perform equipment maintenance checks.
  • Assist internal and external customers in a professional manner.
  • Execute various warehouse transactions electronically.
  • Assist employees or customer in tracking down freight issues.
  • Operate small hand tools.
  • Maintain high level of accuracy when handling materials.
  • Maintain good housekeeping standards with focus on bin maintenance and the care and custody of materials.
  • Adhere to all safety and operations related procedures at all times.
  • Expected to participate in Behavioral Based Safety programs.
  • Pack and/or ship materials in compliance with DOT and hazardous materials regulations.
  • Work directly with Logistics to coordinate Transport Carrier pick up of materials as requested by the Client.



Non-Essential Duties:

  • Any other duties as assigned.
  • Participate on Incident Management Team (IMT), as requested.
  • Participate in Cross Functional Teams, as requested.
  • The position could be at any warehouse on any shift, based on company and customer needs.


Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible material handling experience, or other related experience

  • Experience in the safe loading and unloading of trucks, trailers, and vans required. 
  • Prior forklift experience is preferred.
  • Current or previous International Air Transport Association (IATA) and 49 CFR shipping certifications preferred 
  • Experience in electronic transactions preferred.
  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record required.

Management System (Standard) –Ensures that all unsafe acts, hazards or incidents are identified and reported immediately and stops all activities when an unsafe condition exists.  Minimizes all risks to health, safety, and environment in daily activities by ensuring quality task risk assessments are produced.  Completed all IMS and HSE training requirements annually.  Inspects tools and equipment before use and ensures that adequate training has been obtained prior to use.  Wears and utilizes all necessary PPE where appropriate.  Maintains compliance with all corporate policies and procedures.  Maintains compliance with customer requirements and expectations.

Material Handling - Experienced in the safe loading and unloading of trucks, trailers and vans.  Working knowledge of turn in procedures and/or cyclical inventory.  Certified forklift operator.  Knowledge of shipping and handling, and issue counter procedures.  Knowledge of tool room issue, control and repair of hand tools.  Certified and mentored reserve expeditor or loader operator. Assists lead and/or SPOC in providing day to day instruction to Material Handling Technician I employees.

Planning/Organizing – the individual prioritizes and plans work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans, plans for additional resources, sets goals and objectives, organizes or schedules other people and their tasks, develops realistic action plans, has ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, has ability to work long hours and weekends to meet a deadline, can work on short-term assignments with tight deadlines while managing multiple tasks and projects.  Is able to effectively break project up into tasks and execute to completion.  Should be effective in independently collaborating, planning, and organizing with other employees, carrying plans to completion.

Quality Management – The individual looks for ways to improve and promote quality, monitors own work to ensure quality and demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness.  Knowledge of quality standards, policies, and procedures in place. Is able to independently meet these standards with minimal supervision.  Intimately familiar with quality standards, policies, and procedures in place. Software & Reporting - The individual is highly experienced in advanced features of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access with working knowledge of the other software tools within the Microsoft Office Suite and has a demonstrated knowledge of computerized database applications. 

Attendance/Punctuality - Ensures work responsibilities are covered when absent; arrives at meetings and appointments on time.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described in this job description are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties and responsibilities of this job. 


The continual ability to be mobile with the use of all senses is required for this position.  Work requires frequent use and wear of safety equipment, operation of computer, office equipment, forklift, light and heavy trucks.  Rarely may be exposed to fumes and noise from forklift/loader, extreme cold during winter (both ambient and chill factor).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Occasional sitting, stationary standing, kneeling and crawling, vision for close work. Frequent walking, crouching, stooping, twisting, turn/pivoting, balancing, reaching overhead with hands and arms, use of finger dexterity to grasp or pinch items, ability to speak and receive phone communications often. Continually climbing, pushing or pulling items up to 50 pounds (assisted) frequently and more than 50 pounds (assisted) occasionally.
