The ABA Journal is seeking an experienced journalist who can cover legal affairs with depth, insight and sharp analysis. We’re looking for a reporter who has a proven track record of creating long-form journalism, as well as daily news experience and/or magazine writing experience. The Journal prizes lively, engaging, narrative driven stories, as well as investigative pieces. We want a self-starter who can develop the kinds of legal affairs stories readers can’t get anywhere else for our print magazine and online. The job works with limited supervision in the development of story ideas and writes compelling legal affairs articles, features, and specialty pieces for the ABA Journal in both print and electronic formats. 


Principal Duties/Job Responsibilities

-Authors legal affairs articles, features, and specialty pieces for publication in the ABA Journal.

-Conceives compelling and informational story ideas for the target audience of the ABA Journal.

-Conducts research, vets and interviews sources, conducts fact-checking to ensure accuracy of reporting and mitigation of risk.

-Conducts legal research for background and/or matters of current interest that affect the practice of law.

-Uses all appropriate editing skills and writing techniques to optimize near first-time, print ready materials.

-Conducts special projects on behalf of the ABA Journal.

 

Basic Qualifications & Interests

-A bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Business Administration, or pre-law from an accredited college or university.

-At least five years’ experience in reporting/writing published materials focused on legal affairs.

-Previous experience interviewing and vetting sources and ensuring the quality and correctness of articles in an appropriate journalistic format.

-Previous experience writing authoritative news and feature length stories on legal issues that translate complex legal issues into reader-friendly, journalistically appropriate narratives.

 

Preferred Qualifications & Interests

-Possession of a Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.
-Daily news reporting  
-Magazine writing
